Restore Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds to provide a concrete solution against the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, creating awareness on the importance of this ecosystem for the Mediterranean Sea.
let’s reforest our sea
Between 2022 and 2023, we restored 500 m2 of Posidonia meadow between Golfo Aranci, Palmaria Island and Elba Island. Through various educational activities, we involved local schools to convey the change we need to build a better future together.
posidonia is
A typical Mediterranean plant
It is found exclusively in our sea and is fundamental for the balance of coastal ecology
The Blue Lung of the Planet
Every day, 1 m2 of Posidonia can generate up to 20 liters of oxygen through photosynthesis
The Mediterranean nursery school
One hectare of Posidonia is capable of hosting up to 350 different species
A natural barrier that protects the coast
1 m2 of Posidonia that regresses causes the erosion of about 15 meters of sandy shoreline
2023
This is how marine reforestation in Golfo Aranci continued in 2023

EDUCATE
We developed an educational project together with EarthEcho
Students from Golfo Aranci schools participated in lectures, biological beach walks and field activities with water quality monitoring. The children had the opportunity to enrich their knowledge and increase their connection with the sea, understanding the importance of protecting it.
REFOREST
We planted 12,500 Posidonia seedlings
In 2022, we restored the first 100 m2 of Posidonia meadow in Golfo Aranci. In 2023, reforestation continued with another 200 m2 in Golfo Aranci, 100 m2 on Palmaria Island, and 100 m2 on Elba Island. The methodology used included the use of sustainable materials, such as coconut fiber bio mats and the collection of cuttings eradicated by storm surges, without affecting the existing seagrass.
MONITOR
We observed a survival rate of cuttings of 76%
The project included close monitoring to analyze: – The success of the operation in terms of rooting and survival; – The contribution of Posidonia in terms of CO2 uptake and sequestration; – The contribution of the new seagrass in supporting biodiversity.
