Action & Biology Campus

GOAL

Create a dedicated training course for young college students and recent graduates on marine-coastal monitoring.

The ABC of Marine-Coastal Monitoring

The course took place over 11 weeks of theoretical and practical activities within an unparalleled naturalistic setting, during which various topics related to marine-coastal monitoring for species of conservation significance were explored.

Topics covered

Coastal dolphin monitoring

Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Monitoring Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds

Scientific photography and photographic sampling techniques

Principles of science dissemination

Photogrammetric methods for the marine-coastal environment

The natural stage

The Campus was held in Golfo Aranci, nestled in the wild northeast of Sardinia.
The area is a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Site of Community Interest (SCI), a place rich in marine biodiversity and a residential area for the bottlenose coastal dolphin. These aspects, and many others, made it the perfect location for an in-depth course on techniques for studying and monitoring the marine environment.
