“Into the Deep” is the manifesto of citizens, companies, institutions, and organizations united in a cohesive and active community, committed to triggering the political change needed to ensure the effective and lasting conservation of our seas.

The sea is the planet’s lifeblood. Wherever we are, it gives us 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorbs one-third of the CO₂ we produce, regulates the climate, and provides vital sustenance to billions of people. Every wave holds biodiversity, culture, and irreplaceable resources.
We recognize the fundamental value of the sea and commit to promoting its effective protection, as a common good essential to our survival.
We’ve long viewed the sea as so vast and limitless that it seemed immune to human impact. But reality tells a different story: our sea is warming rapidly due to the climate crisis, its waters are more acidic and depleted of oxygen, biodiversity is shrinking due to overfishing, and pollution is rampant.
We commit to acknowledging this emergency and no longer ignoring the signs of a sea in distress.
The good news is that we know how to bring the sea back to life. The remedy for the Blue Planet is Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). These safeguarded spaces — only when effectively managed — allow ecosystems to regenerate, protect biodiversity, and generate social and economic benefits for local communities. The sea has an immense power to heal, if we give it the space to do so.
We consider effective MPA management essential to restoring the balance of our sea.
Effectively protecting at least 30% of Italian seas by 2030 is a vital objective to ensure the wellbeing and productivity of the Mediterranean and of us all. This goal is part of the European Union’s Biodiversity Strategy and a global target established by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, ratified by Italy.
We commit to promoting this goal, raising awareness, and supporting concrete initiatives for marine protection.
According to the Protected Planet database, only 10.7% of Italian seas are currently protected, and just 0.06% of that area has proven effective management.
We support actions aimed at increasing funding for MPAs, updating relevant legislation, and training the future managers needed to ensure their effectiveness.
Protecting the sea is not just a task for scientists or politicians: every citizen, company, institution, and community can make a difference. Like many drops coming together, we can create an unstoppable wave of positive change by promoting the importance of the sea and the solutions we already have to shift course.
