GOAL
Create an Alliance to facilitate the protection of 30% of Italian seas by 2030 by promoting and supporting the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
Included within an international effort directed at protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, 30×30 Italia aims to apply this target in Italian waters, a goal as ambitious as it is necessary to ensure the functionality and productivity of the Mediterranean Sea.
Only by working together with other environmental protection associations and movements throughout the country, in an inclusive and participatory way, we have a chance to reach the goal of protecting 30% of Italian seas by 2030.
By sharing resources and tools we have the opportunity to enhance capacity for concrete action and develop effective strategies for the protection of our seas, involving all stakeholders.
Through the involvement of individuals, companies, philanthropic entities, institutions and all entities that have an interest in the preservation of our precious seas, we can generate positive impact and contribute to change.
The effective protection of at least 30% of the seas by 2030 is a goal as ambitious as it is necessary to pursue: to achieve it, Worldrise has launched 30×30 Italia.
Born as a Campaign in 2020, it has become over the years an Alliance of more than 80 environmental protection associations and movements present throughout the country, working synergistically toward this common goal.
The project is now also open to citizens, entities, institutions and anyone who wishes to take part in safeguarding our sea.
Want to contribute to the wave of change?
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) calls for the conservation of at least 30% of the ocean by 2030 through the establishment of a network of MPAs.
The goal, supported by the Zero Draft of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, has been agreed upon by the international scientific community and, in December 2022, was also included within COP15, becoming a goal of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
In addition, in July 2023, the European Parliament passed the Nature Restoration Law, with the goal of restoring at least 20% of degraded land and marine areas in Europe by 2030.

A training journey dedicated to the organizations of the 30×30 Italy Alliance, aimed at strengthening project design skills and developing Erasmus+ proposals together for marine conservation.
30×30 Italia
Throughout 2025, the organizations of the 30×30 Italy Alliance took part in a training program on Erasmus+, promoted by Worldrise with the support of Prosperah and guided by project designer Lara Mastrogiovanni.
The goal: to strengthen the network’s project design capacities and open up new opportunities for collaboration and funding for initiatives focused on protecting the sea.
After three introductory online meetings—focused on understanding the fundamentals of the program and acquiring practical tools for proposal writing—the journey culminated in three in-person days in Galatone (LE), hosted by Galattica Galatone.
Here, 15 organizations and entities within the network worked side by side, divided into four co-design groups, turning their ideas into four Erasmus+ project proposals that were officially submitted.
Beyond tangible outputs, the initiative fostered a strong sense of collaboration, thanks to tailored team-building activities and shared moments that strengthened relationships within the network.
Would you like to have the chance to take part in events like this?
A result made possible thanks to the support of Prosperah and the commitment of all the participating organizations, confirming the role of the 30×30 Italia as a catalyst for connection and innovation in marine protection.
13 free online modules created with as many professionals in the field to fully grasp the importance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and their effectiveness for nature, society, and each of us.
30×30 Italia
In well-managed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), the sea returns to its full strength and biodiversity increases, generating ecological, economic and social benefits for local communities. To fully grasp how MPAs work, their strategic importance to the area, and to optimize their potential, it is essential to know them and learn how to manage them effectively.
With this in mind, we have developed the AMP Academy: 13 in-depth modules in video format, created thanks to the contribution of as many experts in the field, under the guidance of the project’s Scientific Director Augusto Navone, a marine biologist.
AMP Academy is a free resource for anyone interested in learning more about the key elements for effective management of these protected stretches of sea: citizens, tourists, Marine Protected Area Directors and the staff involved within these places, but also students, local authorities and institutions.
The MPA Academy project has been created thanks to the support of Fastweb, a company committed to building an increasingly connected, inclusive and environmentally sustainable future for all in line with its “You are Future” strategic vision.
This initiative is also dedicated to the memory of Professor Riccardo Cattaneo-Vietti, one of the pioneers of Italian scientific research and promoter of the establishment and proper management of Marine Protected Areas
A free online personal and professional empowerment course dedicated to alliance member associations to foster positive change within the community.
30×30 Italia
A project implemented in 2024 thanks to the support of Patagonia, which brought together the associations of Worldrise’s 30×30 Italia Alliance to become the spokespersons for the urgent need to protect 30% of Italian seas by 2030.
Through a path of personal and professional empowerment, we provided more than 10 associations with tools for communication, project management, collaborative leadership and community building. The aim, in fact, is to foster positive change within their communities toward achieving 30×30 in the national context, an ambitious but critical goal for the protection of Italian seas.
The online course was divided into 7 modules consisting of theoretical lessons and practical exercises and culminated with the launch of an online communication campaign related to the 30×30 goal in the national context by each association, which reached a total of 36800 users!
In 2021, we launched a petition to demand that Italy makes a concrete commitment to safeguarding our seas. Sign it too!
30×30 Italia
In 2021, we launched the petition “Together to Save Our Seas and Our Future” addressed to the Italian Prime Minister’s Office, the Italian Government and the Ministry Of Ecological Transition, demanding that Italy makes a concrete commitment to safeguarding our seas.
The request, specifically, consists of the following points:
• Protect at least 30% of our seas by 2030
• Join the international coalition of blue leaders, the ambitious group of countries committed to protecting at least 30% of the ocean through a global network of highly and fully protected marine areas by 2030 (“30×30”) and negotiating a new United Nations treaty on the high seas.
To date, we have collected more than 4,000 signatures and secured Italy’s membership in the Blue Leaders coalition, the alliance formed in 2019 to call the international community toward urgent action to protect the oceans in light of the climate crisis, pollution and overfishing.
In 2021, we created 10 marine-themed murals in 10 Italian cities, using environmentally friendly paints. Next to each work is a link to inspirational and in-depth talks on protecting our seas.
30×30 Italia
This project has a clear message: you cannot solve the climate crisis without protecting the ocean.
Together with extraordinary partners, we have created an interactive journey based on knowledge, awareness and action, bringing the sea to the city through 10 beautiful murals linked to 10 pieces of in-depth educational content.
Institutions, research organizations, media companies, private sector and associations, united to promote the change our planet needs. Because only together can we make a difference.
Special thanks to the zeroCO2 b-corp, which, in support of the “Ocean and Climate” project, planted 50 trees for each mural made: 500 new trees that are part of a major reforestation project!
In 2021, we offered 16 young change-makers the opportunity to participate in a unique intensive course to gain the tools they need to bring innovation to their communities and foster the change our planet needs.
